The dog’s body is squashed when it’s sitting, then stretched when it lifts its front paws. In slow motion, the ball looks squashed when it hits the ground, and stretched out when it falls and rebounds. The most important principle is called Squash and Stretch. I tried to use a few of these principles in my GIF of a dog jumping. These can be found in the book The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation by Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas. If you’re like me, you grew up watching Disney/Pixar movies, so one of the first things I researched was Disney’s Twelve Basic Principles of Animation. There is a lot of information out there for the field of animation. Save, crop, preview GIF playback, adjust timing, and export to GIF. Right-click the background layer and select Delete Layer. But I’m going to make the background image bigger. You could scale the animation to match the background image dimensions. My background image is smaller than the animation. My layers all have a transparent background and are 960x720.įrom menu bar, File > Open as Layers, and open desired background image. Combine background:įrom GIMP menu bar, File > Open as Layers.

I chose a free image of a castle in the mountains because the sunlight is from the right side of the the picture which matches the dragon’s shading. Then I decided to place the dragon on a scenic background. The light source is from the right side of the screen. I like that it flies off the screen at the highest point of the loop.

It’s “ART”!įirst I made a series of frames of a dragon making a looptheloop. I think I’d like to continue posting GIFs that are from my favorite shows and movies and my own drawings. Making animated GIFs is a lot of fun and they’re really popular online.

I was also inspired that these artists posted their own tutorials. They also use a variety of software, including GIMP which is what I wanted to learn. They are passionate artists and have posted their work online so their animation process could be studied by people like me who are just fans and like to draw. I chose these animators after looking at several others because they have careers in animation (Disney, Dreamworks, etc.) and studied animation in college. The Animator’s Survival Kit and three animators ( DarkmaneTheWerewolf, Michel Gagné, Toniko Pantoja). I limited myself to some of Disney’s twelve basic principles of animation,

Watching youtube videos of talented animators and favorite animated TV shows and movies seems fun at first, but you can easily be buried under all of the inspiration and research. I had so much fun during my Genius Hour! My questions to myself were:Ĭan I make an animated scene and share a tutorial that could help others to make their own? What software will I need? How can I share a tutorial with my class?
